What is Juvenile Diabetes?
Juvenile Diabetes is a disease, which strikes children suddenly, making them insulin-dependent for life, and causes them to carry the constant threat of devastating complications. Juvenile Diabetes is diagnosed when a person's pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. This disease usually strikes in childhood but lasts a lifetime. People with Juvenile Diabetes must take multiple injections of insulin daily or continuous infusion of insulin through a pump just to survive.
Who is JDRF?
JDRF is the leading charitable funder and advocate of juvenile (type 1) diabetes research worldwide, was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile diabetes. Since inception, JDRF has provided more than $800 million in direct funding to diabetes research. More than 80 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education. JDRF's mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
JDRF and Delta Epsilon Psi
We, the brothers of Delta Epsilon Psi, are committed to supporting this cause. Our chapters have organized and hosted many events that both promote Juvenile Diabetes awareness and help further Juvenile Diabetes research. At Zeta Chapter, here at Baylor University, we organize and hosts many different activities and tournaments to benefit the JDRF. Here are some of the few:
Sugar Free Bowl (SFB) - a campus wide flag football tournament that raises money for juvenile diabetes research
Who's Got Game (WGG) - a whole university charity basketball tournament that his held every year to benefit JDRF
Dodging Diabetes (DD) - a campus wide dodge ball tournament that is held to help raise money and awareness for juvenile diabetes
You Got Served (YGS) - a charity tennis tournament which is held semi-annually to raise awareness and help the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Furthermore our Founding Chapter at Austin also hosts Sugar-Free Bowl, a campus wide flag football tournament that raises money for Juvenile Diabetes research. The Beta Chapter at the University of Texas at Dallas holds a Diabetes Awareness Week. The week's events included sugar-free food tasting, blood-sugar testing, a sugar-free bake sale, a sumo wrestling activity, and an Annual Charity Party. The Gamma Chapter at Texas A&M also host Who's Got Game and a Diabetes Awareness Week . The week's events include a walk, charity party, promotional give-aways, and blood-sugar testing. Epsilon Colony has a booth to raise diabetes awareness, giveaways and "Pie an OU Celeb" (this is where a person can pay a dollar to pie a star football player or a student leader for JDRF) during thier Diabetes Week. Overall our fraternity has donated over $40,000 toward charity through our events and touurnaments.
In addition to the tournaments and events, we also host several philanthropy weeks and activities to promote JDRF while partnering up with local organizations and other organizations. We hope to continue juvenile diabetes awareness and promote the foundation to such a notable cause through our future endeavors.
One of the best ways for those interested outside of Delta Epsilon Psi to assist, is through signing up and attending the various events that we host. Its this type of support that ensures our events will be as successful as possible, allowing us to not only raise donations but raise awareness. Please look for these events in your local community and/or campuses. These philanthropic events occur at least once a semester and provide ample opportunity to help make a difference in finding a cure.
